Port Development Strategy (PDS) 2024

As part of the development of the 2024 PDS, we are seeking community insights in relation to the Port of Geelong. Please complete our survey below to share your views.

A key element of planning for the future is balancing the broader benefits of the Port of Geelong with the communities that interact with the Port and its network.

Project overview

GeelongPort is preparing the 2024 Port Development Strategy (PDS) for the Port of Geelong.

The PDS will:

  • Provide a roadmap for the development of the Port of Geelong to meet trade needs over the next 25-30 years.
  • Define the Port of Geelong’s role in supporting and enabling Geelong and Victoria’s growth, both historically and into the future.
  • Determine the infrastructure and land requirements to support sustainable development and connections with the Port of Geelong’s surrounds, while remaining competitive so it can continue to contribute to our economy.

The PDS will further our existing commitment to support more than 1800 jobs statewide and more than $7 billion in trade annually.

The last PDS was developed in 2018. Updating the PDS allows the Port of Geelong to adapt to the changing circumstances and remain responsive over time, allowing for greater functionality and promoting economic benefit to the local community.

The PDS is required to be prepared every five years under the Port Management Act 1995 and must align with Ministerial Guidelines issued in March 2024, which outline the process for preparing a PDS.

The Port of Geelong footprint

The PDS will take into account the whole of the Port of Geelong which includes a collection of precincts including:

  • Refinery Pier
  • Lascelles Precinct
  • Corio Quay Precinct
  • Bulk Grain Terminal
  • Point Henry Pier

To prepare the PDS, GeelongPort will assess and analyse current and future needs for the Port of Geelong’s services, infrastructure and transport, as well as environmental, community and economic opportunities and risks.

Impacts to the community are better managed when we can plan for the long-term. The community’s feedback is a key part of this planning process. We are currently gathering data and local insights to inform the PDS.
